Nasal Ventilation Study

Optimizing Nasal Ventilation for People with ALS

In this research study, we will compare standard monitoring of nasal ventilation use to an enhanced approach. In the enhanced approach, patients and caregivers will be given information on how effectively they are using devices.

Patients beginning nasal ventilation will be recruited from three ALS clinics (UPMC, Hershey-Penn State, and Drexel-Hahneman) and followed monthly for six months.

We wish to determine if enhanced nasal ventilation monitoring leads to improvements in sleep, less daytime fatigue, and better mood in patients and caregivers.

Recruitment for the study will begin in late 2009.

The project is funded by The ALS Association through its Will Rogers program. The principal investigator is Steven Albert, PhD.
